Game of the Year 2008
Game of the Year 2008
Compiled by Paul Harrington

Here are the results of the 2008 OHR Game of the Year poll, held on Slime Salad, Castle Paradox, and the Walrus Forums. Any game released or updated in 2008 was eligible for voting. There are a few oddities you'll notice here; for instance, how does a terrible game like Yo Ghost end up placing higher than legitimate games? The answer is that I screwed up when making the poll by not working out a better system. The system we used allowed a voter to choose ten games, and placing them in order from most to least favorite. The top three games in each list received bonus points. The problem with this is that, predictably, authors of terrible games would vote their own game #1. Next year, bonus points will only be given to games you voted on that you weren't directly involved with. On a positive note, we received a lot more votes for this poll than we did for 2007's. Unfortunately that still totalled less than 20 voters.

That said, the results!

Top OHR Games of 2008

Vikings of Midgard (Xocolotl+ Edition) by Fenrir-Lunaris
1st
Place
Total Points: 34
Fenrir's tale of gods and oafs takes first place a second year in a row, once again by a wide margin. This updated version improves on an already solid foundation to create one of the most expertly crafted traditional RPGs made using the OHR engine.

I Made Dis Too by Gilbert
2nd Place
Total Points:
23
This unexpected sequel to I Made Dis hit the OHR community like a fist to the mouth and left the world reeling. "This game gave me exactly what I wanted, even though it was a bit short. Gilbert's still a joke game god." -JSH

Surlaw Armageddon (11/2008 Release) by Paul Harrington
-TIE-
3rd Place
Total Points:
20
For the second year in a row, Surlaw Armageddon ties for third place. The latest update brings us further into a nightmarish world and explores a mirror universe version of Walthros.

OHR House 3 by JSH
-TIE-
3rd Place
Total Points:
20
In spite of a long hiatus since the last episode, OHR House 3 proves that the OHR Reality Show genre is still popular and going strong. "Instead of season two, where each episode was trying to one-up on the last until the stakes just got a little too high, we have a genuinely funny character-oriented show that implements and improves on the formulas of the past two seasons." -Uncommon

Runners-Up

Surf's Up Yuk by RMZ & Worthy
Total Points:
15
Released for Fenrir's Evil Spock contest, where authors attempted to replicate the style of another author, Surf's Up Yuk has been enduringly popular. In spite of losing the contest to Super Walrus House, this game has proven to be the more long-lived of that contest's two finalists, taking 15 points in the Game of the Year vote while Walrus House managed a mere 2.

OHR House: Heroes by RMZ
Total Points:
14
RMZ's take on the OHR House formula gained almost as many votes as Surf's Up Yuk, making him the only author with two games in the top 10. "This one has honestly surprised me with how well it's done, and I look forward to each installment." -Fenrir

Timpoline by Adam Perry
Total Points:
13
A bounce-based platformer, Timpoline is one of the most unique games on this list. This game should serve as encouragement to anyone who wants to do something untraditional with the OHR engine. "A really cool idea. Hard as hell, but fun." -Uncommon

Jailbreak by Aethereal and Mr. J
Total Points:
12
Like Surf's Up Yuk, Jailbreak wasn't the winner of the contest it was made for (8-Bit Contest 2008) but has remained a fan favorite even after the contest ended. "One of the best entries this year and one of the best games released since Catacombs in my opinion. This one is just plain cool. It’s not an RPG. It’s not a sidescroller. It’s like a high-octane level straight out of Metal Gear, with a main character that’s anything but cushy. Definitely worth your time, though I must emphasize this game is tough." -Pepsi Ranger

Escape from Darkavern by TwinHamster
Total Points:
12
Escape from Darkavern is an adventure game where everything in sight can and will kill you. Repeatedly. "Am I putting this here because it's the best game of 2008 or because I just want TwinHamster to continue it that badly? I don't know. All I know is that this game's peculiar brand of humor and tantalizing stats have endeared me to it permanently." -Moogle

Attack Fish Chronicles Volume I: The Omega (Complete version) by Meatballsub
Total Points:
11
"Gameplay is well done and a bit different. It still plays much like a traditional RPG, but adds variety compared to what we usually get on the OHR." -Only One in All "This game also has creative VISION, and pretty well-executed vision at that, which I value highly." -JSH

Hedgemaze by Newbie Newtype
Total Points:
9
"A unique battle system and reasonably nice graphics (considering its limitations) make this game one of the better entries. The story is flimsy, maybe even nonexistent, but the fun comes from portioning your restorative items, so it achieves some level of excitement. Worth your time." -Pepsi Ranger

The Adventures of Mikey T by Meatballsub
Total Points:
7
Winner of the 2008 8-Bit Contest. "This game has an urban atmosphere unparalleled in the OHR game universe. In spite of its shortcomings, it was one of the most interesting games of the year." -JSH

Night of 10,000 Bullets by Twin Hamster
Total Points:
6
A halloween themed shoot-em-up from TwinHamster. "I've always been fond of concept games, the kind that don't take themselves too seriously and recognize the OHR as more of a stepping stone or hobby than an opportunity to make that damn generic RPG epic that everybody's always wanted to make at some point in their lives, so I will definitely welcome the opportunity to kill a few minutes shooting at some pumpkins while some techno stuff oontses on in the background." -Uncommon
