________________________________________________________ I'm making this log entry as a reminder to myself. Why we're out here risking our necks for a bunch of laid back, oblivious slackers on Terra. All right, so they're not all that bad. I just get frustrated sometimes having to keep reminding myself that five years ago I went through hell fighting these THINGS, and there's not been so much as a blip in the media. You know, one of those "special interests" sections that occasionally slip into the newspapers that nobody happens to read anymore. You'd think people would read something other than the funnies or the world news. Anyhow, five years ago I found myself fighting terrorists in the desert after they kidnapped a bunch of philanthropists or something. My memory's a little hazy about it all. Your mind just sort of goes numb after a while when you're standing over the body of someone you've killed for the sake of your country. They're your enemy sure, but they're a person too. I can't recall how many nights I've spent tossing and turning wondering how many kids' lives I ruined, just because their daddy isn't coming home. It reminds me I'm still human (cybernetics be damned), or at least that I still have a conscience. Not these THINGS. They showed up shortly into my counter-terrorism duties, and just started wrecking all kinds of havoc. They're called "Kothyl" whatever the hell that means. ![]() I should start off by saying these things still give me nightmares. I've seen all sorts of varieties of them - their body structures make no sense. They can rip off one of their own limbs and regrow a new one in seconds to fit a new task, probably using nanotechnology - meanwhile the limb finds a wall or floor and burrows itself into it to become a part of it, and spread some bio-machinery through it. God help you if they manage to grab hold of one of YOUR arms. They just take over your body, but they leave your mind intact. That's probably the scariest part about these creatures - you've got no control over your own body to do whatever they want, while your mind is still there screaming silent protests about it all. It's the most violent and profound kind of rape I can imagine. I think I'd prefer to die, rather than be part of their collective hive. So I, and a crew of about 100 or so are out here in the local neighborhood of stars trying to find where these things come from, then drop a few nukes over their home world to get rid of them all. That's the only way to be sure. Fortunately they can be killed, and that's all my superiors care about. Frankly, having fought these Kothyl before I agree with the top brass. This is a military mission first and foremost - unlike that of our sister ship. I can't remember it's name, but the guy leading it's mission was some sort of pig. He seemed to have some sort of scientist's quality to him, like he wanted to analyze everything. I think his name was Horace? Anyhow we lost contact with him a few months ago when he entered some kind of spatial rift. Wherever he is, I hope he's doing all right. He'll be fine, I'm sure. -End transmission- |
