Tazoan

Tazoan. This game intrigues and confuses me. See that title screen? There is no scenery even remotely like it in the game right now. The author has discontinued the game, so we'll never know if the romantic cityscape ever enters play in the story.

Which is too bad, since the game starts out interestingly enough: our heroine, Madin, is abducted by the military and given amnesia. Simple plotscripting is used to great effect throughout the existing game right from the start. She struggles to regain her memory and breaks free of the military complex, where she meets a diminuitive prince named Shiro.

Shiro helps her escape, but a close encounter splits the two up. Madin is alone again and finds herself in a town that looks vaguely like it came from the set of a spaghetti Western.

The town is pretty linear, but well-populated, and stores allow Madin to gun, buy, and sew. (Wait, what?) After wandering around for a bit, Madin gets herself into trouble and Shiro shows up again. The two take a train to the next city. A few cutscenes, flashbacks, and battles later, they arrive.

At this point, the game kind of falls apart. I'm not sure what to say about this, but suddenly the map switches, Madin and Shiro transform into elves, and everyone around them starts speaking Japanese.

This is really odd. There's no story explanation for it and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with a mislinked text box. Either way, the story ends here.

The game has its charms. The graphics aren't great, but the churches are impressive. The scripting, as mentioned, is simple, but very effective. This is a great game to play if you want to see how to make good cutscenes without a lot of work.

Unfortunately, it's too incomplete to recommend as anything else. This is kind of a shame, because I'd really like to find out how the characters end up as elves in Japan. The game shows promise, but sadly the author has abandoned her game.
